Ivan Lyne, drummer in the Druids:

"The Druids embarrassingly won the first contest, we were all (except Elmer Ashbranch) still going to School.

The only reason we won was because of our equipment. I had a set of drums which could have come from a circus band (later donated to Fritz) the lead and vocals all went through an vox ac30 the bass was a 20watt amp and 12" speaker borrowed from Oe Jewell and the rhythm guitar used a grundig tape recorder as an amp. This resulted in us being the quietest band and as the judges were on stage with us. I don't think we frightened them as much as some of the other acts."
